CHARLES DAVID STUART TRIBUTE TO HUBIE CRAWFORD

This tribute has some special meaning to me. Hubie Crawford was someone I knew for a short time while in college. I met him when he was hanging out on the patio by the cafeteria grill. There were a group of us who met whoever happened to be there between classes. He was a very interesting older man, who had played with some of the greatest jazz and blues musicians. I wonder if C4c remembers him?

As it turns out, he died a little over two years ago from a possible reaction to a new blood pressure medication. That was sad news. Probably one of the nicest people I have run across in my life… and you know how I am… I talk to just about anyone. He was full of fascinating stories and had an outstanding music collection that he happily shared. If nothing else… and he was much more than this… he gave me a good education about music.

One day we were sitting at the table and everyone got up to leave for class but Hubie and me. We sat there quietly, just smoking our cigarettes. Time passed by… after a long stretch he looked at me and smiled. “You know when you are truly comfortable with someone when you can enjoy silence together.” He said. He was right too. I was very content just sitting there in his quiet company. Being silent is something that I do not do often enough. Ha. But I liked that so much that I have carried it with me all these years.

So, in the memory of a funny, talented, kind man. Mostly silence on Oodles of Funch today.

  1. Mostly silence? Year, right, it would only be mostly silent if there were no words and a muted video, then all that could be heard is the tapping on my keyboard. Nice tribute though.

  2. I like that kind of silence with someone - not awkward, just comfortable and content to be in that moment.

  4. secret agent woman-- Oh I do too! It was sort of a golden moment and a memory that I treasure. I have been thinking of Hubie a lot lately and only learned of his death when searching for a possible video of him to share with all of you. I cannot say how sad it made me to find his obit instead. But it put me in a mood to turn off the frog pond and go to bed very early.

  9. Never heard of him. The headline on the local fishwrap this morning was about a local artist that died yesterday, at 62. I had seen him around but that was about it.

The rag said that he was a really nice monkey, laid back and loving and all that, but I'm four years up on him, it pays for me to be cranky, it keeps me going, ha ha ha ha

  12. I like the style of the music and a great story to go with it. I worked with many musicians in my day and found that they were truly fascinating characters.

  14. Ananda - Yet another thing that I don't remember ;-(

It is always sad to hear the news of a passing...how 'bout Brittany Murphy?

  15. C4c-- Yes that one tripped me out too. You know she was in Girl Interrupted. She played an anorexic girl who only ate chicken that her father roasted for her. So we called her the "chicken- eater".

Well I guess that Hubie was more of a thing after you went to the U. He was in the courts with us.

  16. Thanks for sharing and even though I never heard of the man it was a very nice tribute of you. But now I have heard of him and I am glad I have.

  17. Shife-- Yay! Glad to see you as always... I was just selling your blog to a friend. Funny how that works out.

Well Hubie was more of a background guy. Not a lot of folk knew him.

  19. That's really cool. I'm loud in public, but at home i can be pretty quiet. I love it when I can be quiet around someone and it isn't uncomfortable.
